Brad’s Four Rules of Business Success

A decade ago, I was about to start finals for my last time ever. I was 31-years old, had done sales, product development, management, been sued and sued others, and was finishing a 4 year graduate degree. My JD/MBA was “in the bag,” and I was also so exhausted I was almost hospitalized. I had NO IDEA what my future held.

It was at this point that I asked myself, “What have I learned so far?”

The answer was these four rules, and they have become a foundation of my business coaching methodology.

I have used them as operating instructions in life and business, taught them maybe 5,000 times, and seen sincere adoption by businesses, friends, and even family, all of which is humbling because I don’t know how they came out.

Suffice it to say, these are important and they stand the test of time.

Use them.

Memorize them.

Follow them, and you will find success.

Rule 1: Define success

You know this. You’ve heard this. It’s a “must do” before you do anything else. In order to move forward, you must know where you’re trying to go.

Rule 2: Only do things that INCREASE the likelihood of success

Success isn’t about achieving everything you can. It’s about prioritizing, refining and getting clear on which things actually add to your success (do more of that) while reducing or eliminating the things that distract or detract from success.

Rule 3: Always know your audience

People forget this one the most. Everything starts with who you’re doing it for. You must define this in order for you to be successful.

Rule 4: You are not your audience

Just because you think something is great, wonderful, amazing, and you like it, you cannot test your solutions on yourself. You always have to remember you’re solving for someone else’s problems.
